A product really taking off for us in the UK market is European Oak, not only for general joinery purposes, but also for the construction of Oak framed houses. Franz Wagner, previously mentioned in the web-site as partners to J.u.A.Frischeis veneers, has access to some fantastic quality timber.
Because Wagner has his own sawing, kilning, and grading facilities on site, this means that he is controlling all the production procedures. Therefore he is making sure all the processess that can effect quality, are properly carried out.
Logs are bought mainly in Austria, and southern Germany, so that Franz can actually go and inspect before he purchases. He is the 5th generation of the original owner, so has a lot of experience of buying.
I have visited his Mill in Austria, and have seen the care he, and his well trained staff, take in ensuring the correct quality of their lumber is delivered to a customers specific requirements. I took a UK customer with me, who is a bespoke door manufacturer. He was looking for timber to machine lippings, to match with the veneer from Frischeis. He has become a very satisfied customer, and is extremely impressed with the clean quality, and colour of the timber.
Wagner grades his Oak in a I, II, and III quality. The I quality is selected to produce timber which is 80% clear. His II quality gives 50% clear, and is used when timber with a bit more character is required. Widths are generally 10cm and wider, but he can select wider specifications. He offers in 26, 32, 38, and 50mm thicknesses.
You can also source large dimension Oak from him, which he can supply to your cutting lists, and will mark up with any code numbers etc. This can be Kiln Dried(depending on thickness), Air Dried, or Green.
All Wagner asks for is a 10m3 minimum order, then we can be sure of beating competitors prices, because we then don’t have the expense of storage facilities in the UK. It also means that transport costs don’t become too high.
We would be more than willing to supply a sample pack of timber. If it did not come up to your specification for whatever reason, we would remove it from your yard.
